Physical Environment
The environment of any cool desert can be defined by its salty soil, relatively high precipitation (as both rain and snow), and moderate temperatures. Despite its typically high precipitation, a cool desert is called a "desert" because its heavy soil makes it hard for any fragile plants and animals to survive.
A cool desert can be thought of as having an environment between a hot desert (such as the Sahara Desert) and a cold desert (such as arctic tundra). Its temperatures are relatively moderate.
Cool deserts such as the Great Basin have lots of mountains, caves, and streams.

The physical environment of the Great Basin is diverse and thriving, even in the winter.
